The human body has a number of energy centers through which energy may travel, or which can act as receivers for energy from the outside.

While these may have many names, depending on the metaphysical background of the speaker, they are most commonly known as the Chakras.

This term comes to us from Eastern metaphysical traditions, and has an ancient heritage of study and written information.  Interestingly, it is from these traditions that the concept of comparing the Chakras to flowers is derived.

These Chakras are roughly in line with, and have a connection to, the human endocrine system.

Like flowers, they are seen as being at their best when fully opened, but due to stress, illness, etc., they may be closed.  Today’s occultists and metaphysicians, working with natural energies, tend to think of them more as an array of antennas than as flowers.

Anyone who has seen a parabolic dish antenna, and understood the purpose of the concave dish for receiving and/or transmitting energy, can easily understand the similarity.

Their natural state is fully open, allowing us to draw in all sorts of energy for healing, enhancement of psychic ability, communication, and other purposes.

In today’s society, however, we tend to be surrounded by stress, tension, negativity and general unpleasantness.  It is, in many instances, a form of psychic self-defense to allow these receptive energy centers to shut down rather than to leave them open and bring in the harmful energies of those around us.

People who are natural empaths (those gifted with the ability to sense the feelings and emotions of others) are often most at risk of such negativity, and frequently build layer upon layer of insulation around themselves to guard against such influence.

Once one begins to move along the path of self-realization, however, one recognizes the importance of consciously re-opening these tightly closed energy centers.
